People may assume that when I am writing horror, I surround myself with horror. The truth is, most of the time, I am watching comedy on YouTube.
Writing about fear, death, grief, monsters, and people trapped in terrible situations can get heavy after a while. Comedy gives me balance.
AceVane, ItsReal85, Rabsopetty, and Mandella Eskia are four creators who help provide that balance.
AceVane’s superhero dialogue and timing always get me. ItsReal85 can turn GTA and other video game moments into full comedy scenes. Rabsopetty brings his own style to anime, especially with Jujutsu Kaisen and the Hood Anime Awards. Mandella Eskia takes me back to the old-school cartoons, movies, and commercials I grew up with.
And if Mandella Eskia only knew how many times I laughed at the booty shorts from He-Man. That still gets me.
Meanwhile, I might be writing about a creature outside someone’s house, a cursed object, or somebody losing control of their mind while one of these guys has me laughing in the background.
That contrast works for me.
They keep the room light even when the story is dark. They may never know me personally, but I truly appreciate them and their craft.
Sometimes the people who help you create will never know they helped you.
